WSU Baseball: News And Notes Before Sunday's Doubleheader

Jason Monda and Kyle Johnson at practice.
In case you did not know and were wondering why no game was played today, the game was postponed until tomorrow due to snow in Pullman overnight and continuing into this morning. The game was rescheduled for Sunday, the doubleheader will begin at Noon with the second game starting 30 minutes after the first concludes.

Before tomorrow's games I've got a fews notes for you on Friday's doubleheader and some audio from my post game interviews.

After sweeping the doubleheader on Friday, the Cougs moved to 3-2 on the season and pushed Nebraska-Omaha to 1-5. The two wins were lopsided and they produced some interesting (read: odd) bits of statistics. From the doubleheader:

  • WSU recorded 28 unofficial at-bats in the doubleheader. For those of you not sure what that means, an at-bat is not recorded in the event of a HBP, BB or sacrifice fly/hit.
  • In the first inning of game one, WSU batted through the lineup (1-9) without recording an at-bat, scoring 5 runs. The only at-bat recorded in the inning was on the final out.
  • In game one, the Nebraska-Omaha pitching staff threw 182 pitches, 94 of which were balls.
  • In total during the doubleheader, WSU drew 7 HBP.
After the jump we have a post game video interview with Coach Marbut, some discussion about the games and audio from my interviews with Coach Marbut, J.D. Leckenby and Derek Jones.

Let's start off with the video! Here's Coach Marbut post game, courtesy of WSU Media Information.

The WSU offense exploded in the doubleheader, but the two games weren't all positive, the WSU pitching staff didn't do bad but they absolutely didn't perform to the level they should have against a bad Neb-Omaha team.

In total as a staff the WSU arms allowed 24 hits and 10 runs. Only 10 runs on 24 hits is good, yes, but 24 hits is a lot more allowed than I would like to see against a team like this.

Most of us know Coach Marbut is aggressive on the base paths, but for those of you who don't know let me give you an example. In the second game WSU had a man on second base (can't remember who, although it was someone with above average speed). A fly ball was hit into fairly deep right-center for an out. Normally in this situation the runner tags up and advances to third, right? Usually, almost always, yes. In this case, the runner tags up and TRIES TO SCORE FROM SECOND.

Let's just say it was frustrating.

I don't have a whole lot else for you guys, sorry. It's been a long week and I just kind of want to go to sleep for the rest of my life.

I'll be at the games tomorrow, provided they are played. Neb-Omaha plays in Seattle on Tuesday, so if the games are again postponed tomorrow I'd imagine they schedule an early doubleheader on Monday. If the games are postponed again tomorrow I'll let you know as soon as I know.

Until then, here's the audio from after Friday's games.
